Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetes is a multifaceted metabolic condition that hampers the body's ability to produce or utilize insulin for regulating blood sugar levels efficiently. Prolonged elevated blood sugar levels can lead to various complications, impacting overall health and well-being.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you are at risk of vision loss due to Diabetic Retinopathy, which occurs when high blood sugar damages retinal blood vessels. Strict blood sugar control is crucial for prevention, while early detection is vital. Laser surgery is a common treatment for macular edema or proliferative retinopathy, aiming to prevent further vision loss by targeting leaky areas of the retina. While recovery of significant vision is rare, some experience partial restoration. Laser surgery isn't a cure but can help prevent further vision decline. Medications like steroids or anti-VEGF drugs are also options for diabetic retinopathy treatment.

A thorough eye examination by an optometrist or retina specialist is crucial for detecting diabetic eye diseases. This involves dilating the pupil and using an ophthalmoscope to assess the retina's condition. Further tests like a fluorescein dye test or optical coherence tomogram (OCT) may be recommended if retinopathy is suspected. A fluorescein angiogram entails dye injection into a vein followed by retina photos, while OCT creates a detailed macula image. It's important to have annual dilated eye exams and control blood sugar levels. Any sudden vision changes like blurriness or haziness should prompt immediate contact with your eye care provider.
