Eye-Health-Keratoconus

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a condition characterized by the distortion of the cornea, the clear structure covering the eye's front. The cornea plays a vital role in focusing light, with 85% of this function attributed to it. While a healthy cornea has a domed shape, in keratoconus, the cornea gradually thins and bulges, causing it to sag and distort vision.

Keratoconus typically manifests in adolescence, causing symptoms like blurred vision and frequent changes in prescription. While glasses are insufficient for full correction, specialized medical contact lenses can restore functional vision. Diagnosis often involves slit-lamp examination and corneal topography to assess corneal curvature and thickness. Treatment options range from glasses and contacts in early stages to surgical interventions in advanced cases. Consulting with an expert ensures tailored care for optimal management of the condition.
