Are you thinking about having LASIK vision correction to help reduce or eliminate your need for glasses? This is certainly taking an exciting step forward in improved vision, comfort and convenience. However, before having LASIK surgery it is always important to have a LASIK pre-surgical evaluation – otherwise known as a LASIK consultation. Our Brighton eye doctor at Family Eyecare of Brighton performs these exams on a regular basis.
Our expert Brighton eye doctor is Dr. Kellie Stennis. Dr. Stennis is an excellent optometrist who provides LASIK pre-surgical evaluations for many patients, and is very knowledgeable in this area. During this consultation, Dr. Stennis will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK vision correction. LASIK can be used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, it is very important that you are a good candidate for this surgery. If you are not a good candidate for this surgery, and surgery is performed, it may not go well – in fact, your vision can even be damaged. For this reason, most doctors will not even consider performing LASIK on a patient who cannot pass this evaluation. After a comprehensive exam with our doctor, you will know that you are a good candidate, and will be able to move forward with this exciting procedure. Most patients do pass this evaluation; but there are also patients who do not pass the screening procedure but who become good candidates in a year or so.
Dr. Stennis will perform a comprehensive eye exam during your LASIK consultation as well as ask you important questions about your eye history and medical health. Patients may not be able to have LASIK surgery if they have certain corneal diseases or other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or serious problems with wound healing. You also cannot have LASIK surgery while you are pregnant or nursing. Also, it is important that your eyeglass or contact lens prescription is stable and has not changed over the past year or two. Generally it is also considered important that the patient is over 18 years of age. Our Brighton eye doctor will also examine the shape of your cornea, your corneal thickness, and the size of your pupils’ diameter in the dark. Once it is determined that you are a great LASIK candidate, our optometrist will be happy to refer you to an ophthalmologist who expertly provides your type of LASIK surgery. If you would like to meet with our optometrist for a LASIK consultation, contact us today for an appointment.
